Sticking with Creativity

The Art Institute is an educational corporation dedicated solely to teaching the creative arts of fashion, design, media arts, and culinary arts. Those who have ambitions for a career in the culinary arts and management industries would do well to start at the Art Institutes. These schools provide training for entry-level jobs in restaurants, bakeries, and other food service businesses. Students can earn certificates, diplomas, Associate and Bachelor’s degrees that offer a solid foundation of food services skills, arts, and sciences.

There are thirty-four International Culinary Arts programs at Art Institutes in major cities throughout the United States and Canada, which gives hopeful chefs and restaurant owners plenty of choice in location. However, not all campuses offer the same degrees and programs, so be sure to check them out before enrolling.

All Art Institutes campuses are accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, and some, like those in Dallas, Las Vegas, Pittsburgh and San Diego (just to name a few) are also accredited by the American Culinary Federation for having exemplary faculty, curriculum, and educational opportunities for students.

Choosing a Path

Students have the opportunity to focus their education in Culinary Arts; Culinary Management; Baking & Pastry; Hospitality Management; and Food & Beverage Management. The length of time to complete a program increases incrementally from Certificate and Diploma, which take approximately 6 months to one year, to Associate’s, which takes about two years, to a Bachelor’s Degree which takes four years.

For those who are interested in working in the kitchen, programs in culinary arts and baking & pastry are the way to go. These programs focus on techniques and skill with food, cutlery, dish preparation, food sanitation and safety, and menu planning. Those with a knack for business and management may be more inclined for management tracks that offer classes in business, finance, marketing, communications, purchasing, and customer service.

Most programs incorporate both in-class instruction and hands-on practice in local kitchens, restaurants and wineries, giving students a great opportunity to get their foot in the door for job placement after graduation.
