New York State Culinary Schooling

From all around the world people flock to New York to visit and to make a new life. This rich cultural diversity brings with it a rich diversity in culinary offerings. New York is renowned for its tall buildings, plays, shops, and food. It is, therefore, no surprise that the opportunities for a solid culinary education abound.

Degrees offered

Community colleges offer one-year certificates and two-year associate’s degrees in a variety of culinary arts disciplines. Universities continue those programs to a four-year bachelor’s degree and some also offer a master’s degree option. The higher degrees mostly involve study in hotel and restaurant management. Online programs also focus on management and are targeted to those in the culinary field who want to move from the culinary arts to management. More than 50 percent of the executive chefs made their careers on an associate’s degree. School opens doors; dedication and hard work create success in the field.

Choose the school that is right for you

Getting the right job after graduation starts with choosing the school that offers the best educational experience tailored to your specialty. With so many programs and schools to choose from, take care that the expense and experience will lead to your personal goal. If expense is a major consideration, look to the community college route for a solid education at a reasonable price. Since the heart of culinary arts is food preparation, look for a program with state-of-the-art cooking facilities. Research the teaching staff and their credentials, it will mean a quality education and a foot in the employment door. Look for an active externship & apprenticeship programs where students work off-campus and become known in the local job market. The school should boast a good job placement record. The best programs include a study abroad option.

Job market

Black & White Photo of Full Moon Over Manhattan.

Labor market projections for New York State in culinary arts are good through 2019. With the rise in food dollars spent in restaurants, a full 50 percent of the family’s food budget is now being spent outside the home; the prospects for entry-level food service jobs are good. Top jobs remain competitive. Specialties include: prep-chef, pastry, bakery, line cooks, sous chef, executive chef, and regional chef. Restaurants account for 65 percent of the jobs. Other options include hotels, convention centers, spas and cruise ships. Large cities and the better restaurants command the highest wages. Typical food industry salaries in New York range according to position, city, and experience. A waiter/waitress will earn an annual average salary of $37,150; a Registered Dietitian earns $68,590; a first-line supervisor will earn about $42,260; a head chef will earn approximately $59,380; and a restaurant cook earns an average salary of around $32,450.
