Catalog of Culinary Schools in Nevada
Nevada could very well be the Mecca for students of the culinary arts and hospitality trade. The large number of programs concentrated in just a few schools across Nevada does a good job of preparing its graduates to quickly and effectively enter some of the top gaming and hospitality destinations in the world: Las Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Laughlin. With thousands of hotels, resorts, convention centers, restaurants pouring billions of dollars into the state’s economy each year, students in Nevada are assured a quality and innovative education in the hospitality and culinary arts services.
What’s Here?
Nevada knows hospitality. If you throw a stone anywhere in Last Vegas or Reno, it’s very likely that it will land on an education program that is somehow connected to the hospitality and food service industry. Students have a range of degree choices from certificate, Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD.
Degrees and Programs
Clearly, the most prevalent types of culinary and hospitality program in Nevada are those focusing on hotel and hospitality management. At the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV), students can earn a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or PhD in programs that specialize in hospitality administration, sports and leisure services management, beverage management, culinary arts, food service management, lodging and resort management, and meeting and events management. Unlike at other schools, these are not single classes, but intensive programs that go deep into the science, art, and practicalities of specific areas within the hospitality profession.
Associate level degrees and certificates are available at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) in North Las Vegas, and are designed to transfer directly to the university level Bachelors programs. At CSN, courses teach students a foundational knowledge of the culinary and hospitality industry. Courses cover restaurant operations, food production, food and beverage purchasing, and food sanitation.
For students who lean more toward the science and nutritional side of the food industry, the University of Nevada at Reno offers Bachelor and Master level programs in nutritional science and dietetics. Students learn to identify and research the science of food, nutrition, and the cultural factors that influence what we eat. Graduates from these programs often go on to become Registered Dietitians, but can also find work planning meals or designing whole food programs at a variety of food service venues.
Industry professionals who would like to continue their education have alternative class opportunities at The International School of Hospitality in Las Vegas. TISOH offers executive diplomas and certificates in catering, hotel management, wedding planning, and conferences and events. Courses last between three and five months, and can be taken online or at an accelerated pace.
Graduates are likely to find a job they love in any of the thousands of restaurants, resorts, schools, and hotels in Nevada. Typical food industry salaries in Nevada range according to position, city, and experience. A waiter/waitress will earn an annual average salary of $23,770; a Registered Dietitian earns an of $62,940; a first-line supervisor will earn about $37,620; a head chef will earn approximately $56,850; and a restaurant cook earns an average salary of around $33,500.
